There is the story of the son who came to his mother and shared that he would become a rabbi. She said, “you could have been a doctor, a lawyer, but a rabbi? What kind of job is that for a nice Jewish boy?!?” Please know, when I told my mother that I was going to rabbinical school, she never said that to me. My mother is proud of all of her children, and yes, very proud of her son the rabbi. By now, most of you have received the invitation to our congregation's celebration of 10 years of my tenure as Rabbi of Congregation Shaarei Kodesh. As I thought about some of the things I have accomplished, I have to go back to something I've shared with you before: I've made my mother proud on many occasions, but being on NPR in December was a high point for her. Rosh Hashanah Day 2 - October 1, 2019 - 2nd of Tishrei 5780 Jews Step Out of Line© Rabbi David Baum, Congregation Shaarei Kodesh It is the season of repentance, but first, you have to confess, so here it is - my public confession. This summer, I was with our sons in the deep south, and you can’t get any more southern than this, in a Walmart parking lot. I looked around the parking lot and I noticed some cars with Confederate flags bumper stickers, and I became concerned. I took my sons aside and said, “We are going to take off our kippot, and when we are inside, don’t call me Abba, call me Dad.” My sons asked, but, ‘Abba’, I mean, Dad, why? It was at that moment that I choked up - I had nothing to say. What do I tell my children? Why shouldn’t we wear a kippah out in the open anywhere we want, this is America after all! Reflections from my time at Camp Ramah - Summer 2016

It is wonderful to be back home in Boca Raton after two weeks away at Camp Ramah Darom in Clayton, Georgia. It was great spending time with our CSK campers during second session (we had 16 cam pers from our congregation go to Ramah Darom this summer), but I also had the chance to teach campers and staff from all over the U.S. (and Israel). I experience something new every time I serve as Rabbi in Residence at Ramah every summer, but every time I leave camp, I am in awe with how much God’s presence has filled me up. Usually, when we think of having a ‘God’ experience, we think of standing on a mountain, looking at a beautiful waterfall, or a serene lake. These are ‘awesome’ experiences, but what truly ‘fills me up’ at camp are my interactions with students and teachers, both kids and adults, at these beautiful places.
